MIT World has posted video of a debate between Ray Kurzweil and David Gelernter on the question of whether humans can produce sentient machines. Because it tees up a couple of issues, the brief introduction, here, is worth a read.

Of the two, I'm sympathetic to Gelernter's position, but decide for yourself.
