Prize philanthropy

Ethan at my Heart's in Accra links to a story from the Christian Science Monitor on Africa's $5 million prize for top leaders. The Mo Ibrahim Prize, about which more can found at the Mo Ibrahim Foundation web site, was awarded to Joachim Chissano, the former president of Mozambique.

If you're interested in so-called "prize philanthropy," give Tom Vander Ark at the X-Prize Foundation a read. He's lately been giving a lot of thought to the what and why of prizes, contending that they play an important fourth role after markets, governments and non-profits. I've certainly seen a lot about prizes in the news lately - and to the extent that groundbreaking efforts are encouraged and recognized, it sounds like good news to me.
