Find patterns, map complexity?

Just let me get this out. When it comes to the emerging discipline of complexity, I don't know what I don't know. But it seems to me that if we hope to crack the complexity codes, we will have to apprehend it either through language, like math, or receive it with our senses, from art. A representative reality is built into the first discipline and it flows, somehow, from the latter.

Pattern thinking is one of 13 thinking tools described at some length in Sparks of Genius, a book a I read last fall. I've written about it here, here and here.

What I want to know: why do we find patterned information everywhere?

According to its about page, Visualcomplexity.com wants to be a resource for anyone interested in the visualization of complex networks. The web site is similar to another I've taken in my feeds for a while, information aesthetics. There are some clues there.
