Participatory media and authority

Jason Kottke does a little social science on the authority of web logs v. the New York Times. Kottke's research is an early take on the "long bet" between Dave Winer of Scripting News and Martin Nisenholtz of the New York Times on the veracity of this statement:

In a Google search of five keywords or phrases representing the top five news stories of 2007, weblogs will rank higher than the New York Times web site.

Though Kottke believes his results say more about Google than how much people value the New York Times or bloggers as news sources, it's nonetheless an interesting experiment. Check it out if you get a chance.
